Chris Cundy . bass clarinet
Benedict Taylor . viola

No effects were added to these recordings. The sound you hear reflects the natural acoustic of the room. Recorded and engineered by Chris Trent 11th August 2014 at The Chapel Francis Close Hall, Cheltenham UK. Mixed by Chris Trent at Calundronius. Compiled and edited by Chris Cundy. Thanks to Stuart Wilding at University Of Gloucestershire.

All compositions by Chris Cundy and Benedict Taylor.

The chapel that these recordings were made in is a space I’ve been familiar with for close to twenty years now, providing me with a home for various musical collaborations, concerts and recording sessions.
Recorded by musicologist friend Chris Trent, the results give a surprisingly close account of how the bass clarinet and viola respond and play out from each other within the giant emptiness of that room.
Titles such as Aggressive Silver Lines, or The Sum are attempts to create an imagined list of invented terms for camouflage patterns. Our approach to this music is to explore an emergence of expression. Nothing is hidden but it is often incomplete. These improvisations will perhaps provide more contradictions than answers, allowing us a glimpse or a flicker more than any certainty of a solid shape - matters which celebrate the perplexity of the senses.
Part of this is about giving ourselves up to gesture and accident but we do shape melodic figures into this music, and sometimes they linger becoming oddly recognisable. There is a subtle process going on here which seems to be about a loss and retrieval of form.
